The Holy Roman Empire is descending into chaos as a battle for control is launched after the death of its emperor. Feuding brothers King Wenceslas of Czech and King Sigismund of Hungary both want the throne. Lord Boresh (Michael Caine) hires Jan Žižka (Ben Foster) to kidnap Lady Katherine (Sophie Lowe), to prevent Lord Rosenberg (Til Schweiger) from power alongside King Sigismund. Rosenberg sends Torak (Roland Miller) to return Lady Katherine to him. As Lady Katherine is lodged between oppositions, she begins to recognize how the monarchs treat the peasants. Žižka falls for her love of the people, fueling a bloody and brutal pursuit to overcome greed and corruption.

“It’s so cool to learn about Jan Žižka,” commented Lowe, “when I first read the script and everything, it was just incredible. And to be able to bring to life the true events that he actually did was amazing.”

Medieval is written and directed by Petr Jákl, and is available in theaters as of September 9, 2022.

“Petr’s energy was so positive,” explained Lowe. “He was so excited about the movie and was able to bring everyone together and get everyone pumped up. Everyone just wanted to bring Petr’s dream to life. So no matter what it was, we were like, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s do this for him.’ I’m so happy for him.”

Prior to Medieval, Jákl served as director for Ghoul and Kajinek, and has also made appearances as an actor in EuroTrip, Alien vs. Predator, and more. Starring alongside Lowe in the cast of Medieval are heavy-hitters Caine, Foster, Schweiger, Matthew Goode, and more.

“I was so lucky to work with these amazing people and was trying to soak in as much as I could. They’ve all been working for so long and know their craft so well. And they’re also lovely, too, which is like the cherry on top of everything,” said Lowe.

“I got cast a week before we started… I got the call from Petr being like, ‘Can you be in Prague next week?’ and I was like, ‘Yes.’ I didn’t have much time to prepare but when I got there, we got into it. I started doing cross-training, and at night Petr and I had meetings, looking at the characters and what’s important to them, going through the processes and planning things out.”

“Ben Foster’s group, they were together like three months solid, and so we all just bonded really well. We’d all hang out and have nights out, and now it just feels like they’re family. The guys still talk, and they would go to the gym together really every day, just getting jacked, competing with each other in the gym because they wanted to get strong to play their characters,” said Lowe.

Challenges of Filming Medieval

Medieval was filmed in Prague at beautiful locations and works well in juxtaposition to the brutally epic battle scenes that take place in the film, which surely posed challenges to the crew and cast in performing and capturing. Among the copious number of battle scenes is one that takes place on a castle wall. Lowe’s character eventually jumps off of the castle wall and into a body of water, as others dive in after her and continue to fight.

“I was literally standing on the edge,” said Lowe. “That clip is real. I had a safety net, but I was a little scared. But I had such great safety people around me.”

“The whole thing was challenging,” she continued, “the elements we were shooting in, it was really hot, and we’re shooting outside, and then the rain comes, and it slowly got colder and colder and colder, but it’s the same costume…. We just started adding layers as much as we could without showing I’m wearing all of this padding suddenly. And the shooting of the under-the-water scenes was really cold because we did it in the actual water… I know the guys also had armor on every day. It was something that we had to overcome.”

Medieval is a production of J.B.J Film, Genesy, and Double Tree Entertainment, and is distributed by The Avenue.
