Netflix Reveals First Look at Sally’s Return in Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot

A new look at Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre reveals the first look at Sally Hardesty. Originally played by Marilyn Burns in the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie by Tobe Hooper, Sally is now played by Olwen Fouéré. Taking a page from Laurie Strode and the Halloween franchise, this new film brings back Sally to serve as a legacy character to have another showdown with Leatherface decades after the original chainsaw massacre. The first look at her return, seen above, comes to us from USA Today.

While she survived the original film, this will mark the first time the Sally character has returned. The opening narrations of the sequels suggested she was institutionalized and died not long after the events of the 1974 film. The new movie coming to Netflix will disregard all of that by only acknowledging the original movie. This makes Sally the last survivor with Leatherface apparently having escaped before he could be captured, only to return decades later to flay faces once again.

As original Sally actress Marilyn Burns died in 2014, she couldn’t be brought back for the sequel. It was previously announced that Olwen Fouéré would be playing the role in this new film. Fouéré’s best known roles include This Must Be the Place, The Survivalist, and Mandy. Recently, she appeared in the British psychological horror-comedy She Will with Malcolm McDowell and Alice Krige.

Primarily, this new film will follow a group of youths traveling through Texas when they inadvertently encounter Leatherface. It’s a familiar formula, but it works for fans of the series. What’s different this time is that Sally is back with a vengeance, and going by the synopsis, it sounds like she’ll be taking the fight to the chainsaw-wielding maniac. She will need to be careful as Leatherface might be looking to finish the job he started in 1973. You can read the synopsis for the new film below.

“Melody (Sarah Yarkin), her teenage sister Lila (Elsie Fisher), and their friends Dante (Jacob Latimore) and Ruth (Nell Hudson), head to the remote town of Harlow, Texas to start an idealistic new business venture. But their dream soon turns into a waking nightmare when they accidentally disrupt the home of Leatherface (Mark Burnham), the deranged serial killer whose blood-soaked legacy continues to haunt the area’s residents — including Sally Hardesty (Olwen Fouéré), the sole survivor of his infamous 1973 massacre who’s hell-bent on seeking revenge.”

David Blue Garcia directed the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre using a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin; Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues contributed to the story. From Legendary Pictures, the film was originally intended for a theatrical release in 2021, but it was later announced that Netflix had picked up the exclusive rights. This has led to an upcoming streaming release for the movie on the service on Feb. 18, 2022.

The release also marks the latest chapter of a new uprising of well-known slasher film franchises. Halloween lighting up the box office in 2018 has made it easier for other big names in horror like Ghostface and Leatherface to secure all-new legacy sequels of their own. The new Scream movie, the fifth installment of that franchise, hits theaters on Jan. 14.
