‘It Was in Poor Taste’

Gal Gadot now knows how shortsighted it was to release that ‘Imagine’ video at the start of the pandemic.

There are many who still cringe when just thinking back to that “Imagine” video released by Gal Gadot last year, and the Wonder Woman star herself seems to be among them. When the pandemic was coming out in full force in the earlier months of 2020, Gadot posted a video on Instagram with the hopes of letting people know that everyone is “in this together.” Featuring a plethora of Gadot’s celebrity pals, the video features them all taking turns singing the lyrics of the classic John Lennon song.

In a new interview with InStyle, Gadot looked back upon the release of the video, which many critics had lambasted as “tone-deaf” when it was first posted. Nowadays, Gadot agrees that she probably shouldn’t have posted it, though she thinks the biggest issue was with the timing. The actress still insists that the video came from the best of intentions but was ultimately in “poor taste” to post.

“It just felt right, and I don’t take myself too seriously. And with the whole ‘Imagine’ controversy, it’s funny. I was calling Kristen [Wiig] and I was like, ‘Listen, I want to do this thing.’ The pandemic was in Europe and Israel before it came here [to the U.S.] in the same way. I was seeing where everything was headed. But [the video] was premature. It wasn’t the right timing, and it wasn’t the right thing. It was in poor taste. All pure intentions, but sometimes you don’t hit the bullseye, right?”

While the whole “Imagine” fiasco is now seen as a big blunder by everyone involved, the good news is that it didn’t seem to affect the trajectory of Gadot’s acting career. After her sequel Wonder Woman 1984 debuted on HBO Max last year, it was announced that she’ll be teaming back up with director Patty Jenkins for a third Wonder Woman movie. In her new interview, Gadot says the screenplay is still being written and that the project will start shooting in about a year and a half.

Gadot also recently saw some big success with the release of Red Notice on Netflix. The project was the most expensive movie ever developed by the streamer, in part because it featured three A-list superstars like Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson leading the cast. Reviews were rather mixed, but the movie was still a hit, setting the record as the most-watched Netflix Original in the company’s history. A sequel hasn’t been officially ordered at this time but it seems more likely than not to happen at some point.

Always busy, Gal Gadot can also be seen in the upcoming Kenneth Branagh film Death on the Nile. Following several delays, that movie will finally be released on Feb. 11 in movie theaters. Gadot is also attached to an upcoming Cleopatra film with Kari Skogland attached to direct. Fans can debate which performance will mark the high point of Gadot’s career, so far anyway, but chances are the “Imagine” video will forever be a low point.
